Master Plan
Braintree Charts Its Future: Master Plan 2023–2033
How does a historic town just south of Boston prepare for growth while preserving the places and traditions that define it? That was the guiding question for Braintree as it launched its first new master plan in 25 years. The result, adopted in 2023, is a bold yet grounded vision for the next decade, shaped by the voices of thousands of residents.
Braintree is a town of contrasts. It has deep colonial roots, a proud history as the birthplace of two U.S. presidents, and thriving neighborhoods that reflect generations of community pride. At the same time, Braintree is a dynamic, diverse, and transit-accessible suburb where new opportunities are emerging. The Master Plan seeks to honor both sides of this story by balancing preservation with thoughtful growth.
The planning process was remarkable for its breadth of engagement. Through surveys, forums, roadshows, focus groups, and tools like Meeting-in-a-Box and crowdmapping, more than 2,500 touchpoints were recorded. From seniors to new residents, from business owners to civic leaders, the process welcomed a wide spectrum of voices to shape the vision.
The plan is organized around five core themes: building a sustainable community with strong connections, pursuing strategic economic development, ensuring a safe and connected transportation network, supporting diverse housing options, and modernizing town facilities and services.
Recommendations include revitalizing Braintree Square and South Braintree Square, creating new opportunities for housing near transit, advancing the town’s Net Zero by 2040 goals, investing in safe walking and biking routes, and modernizing schools, public safety facilities, and infrastructure. The plan also emphasizes preserving open space and historic resources while fostering a vibrant cultural and civic life.
In every chapter, the Braintree Master Plan reflects a community committed to its past and ready for its future. It tells the story of a town that values its neighborhoods and open spaces while embracing new ideas to keep Braintree thriving, inclusive, and resilient for the next generation.
