Pembroke's Efforts to Purchase Cranberry Bog

As reported in Wicked Local Pembroke last week, the Pembroke CPC is in the midst of an effort to buy a cranberry bog.  The project sounds like a worthy open space purchase, but what I was most interested in when reading this article was the process that the Pembroke CPC is going through to make this project a reality.  Faced with the possibility of losing a state grant if local matching funds are not in hand by the end of the fiscal year, the CPC is recommending funding for the project on an expedited schedule so that it could submit the recommendation to the Spring Town Meeting (whereas its typical recommendations are considered in the Fall Town Meeting).

Another way communities can react quickly to opportunities for open space conservation is by establishing a Conservation Fund, where money for open space protection is appropriated by Town Meeting and is then on-hand, under the control of the Conservation Commission, for future projects.

Read the article as reported by Wicked Local Pembroke for more details on this project and the process.
