APA's Great Places - Massachusetts makes the cut (twice)!

In the December 2008 issue of APA's Planning Magazine (available to APA members only), APA recognized 30 great places in the US in three categories - great neighborhoods, great streets, and great public spaces.  The 30 great places spanned from Ybor City, Florida to Portland, Oregon and included two Massachusetts places:  downtown Salem and Boston's Washington Street.  I was struck by the strong common thread that historic resources played in making these places "Great Places."  An important reminder that historic resources really do play a pivotal role in defining communities and making them special places that we can take pride in.
